It is the operational heart of the Mana Guild: the single largest concentration of mana-related industry in Versa, and arguably in the known world. It is the place where rough stones pulled from the Tower's depths become the refined products that keep the city breathing—where raw, chaotic mana harvested at personal risk by adventurers is processed, standardised, packaged, and distributed into every corner of civilised life.
To stand outside it for the first time is to understand, in a way that no explanation quite manages, how completely the city depends on what happens inside.
Where it sits
The Mana Refinery does not sit inside Versa.
It sits just outside the city's formal boundary, on the landward side away from the docks, where the city's edge gives way to the broad flat ground that the Mana Guild acquired generations ago when the operation was a fraction of its current size. The location was chosen deliberately and has proven itself wise with every decade of expansion.
The reasons are practical and they compound each other.
The Crush Chamber process produces contained but significant mana releases during operation. The Charging Hall maintains a sustained ambient mana pressure that makes prolonged proximity uncomfortable for anyone with meaningful mana sensitivity. The furnace rooms of the Mold Floor generate heat and particulate output that no residential district would tolerate. The constant traffic of heavy carts moving raw stones inward and finished product outward would clog any city street not specifically built for it.
Outside the city boundary, none of these problems apply in the same way. The Mana Guild owns the land. The roads connecting the refinery to Versa's industrial wards were built and are maintained by the Guild itself, wide enough for two fully loaded carts to pass each other without slowing, paved in the same mana-resistant stone used in the facility's construction. Guard posts mark the road at intervals. The journey from the city's edge to the refinery's main gate takes less than half an hour on foot and considerably less by cart.
From a distance, the refinery is visible before anything else on the approach from the city. It is simply too large not to be.
The exterior
The building is not one building.
It is a compound: a collection of interconnected structures enclosed within a perimeter wall of dressed stone that runs far enough in each direction that a person standing at one corner cannot see the other end clearly. The wall is functional rather than defensive—tall enough to mark jurisdiction and discourage casual entry, topped with iron fixtures that hold mana lamps at regular intervals, producing a line of pale pink light along the perimeter after dark that is visible from the city's outer wards on a clear night.
The main gate is wide enough to admit two heavy carts simultaneously, flanked by guard stations staffed at all hours by Mana Guild security. The Guild's mark is set into the stonework above the gate arch: not decorative, just present, the way a property mark is present. This belongs to us. Everything inside operates under our license and our law.
The structures visible above the perimeter wall from outside are varied enough to suggest the different operations happening within.
The factory section dominates the compound's footprint. Its roofline is the highest, broken by the exhaust stacks rising from the furnace rooms and the broader venting structures above the Charging Hall. The stacks produce a faint continuous output—not smoke exactly, more like heat shimmer with a very slight luminous quality in low light, the visible exhaust of mana being processed in volume. Workers in Versa's outer wards who have lived near the city's edge for years use the refinery's stacks as a weather indicator. When the output runs clean and straight the conditions inside are normal. When it spreads and dims something in the process is running heavy.
The office wing is immediately distinguishable from the factory section by its architecture. Where the factory is broad and low and built for function, the office wing has the deliberate proportions of a structure meant to receive people of consequence. Stone-framed windows. A secondary entrance with a covered approach for carriages. Guild banners hung at the corners, the only decorative element visible from outside the compound. It reads as the public face of an institution that wants to be taken seriously by the people it does business with.
The workshop annex sits to the side of the main compound, connected to the factory section by a covered passage but architecturally distinct from both the factory and the office wing. Its roofline is lower and more varied, broken by smaller venting chimneys and the occasional framework structure that holds equipment between uses. The windows are wider than in the office wing, designed for working light rather than impression.
The factory section
This is where the refinery earns its name.
The factory floor is the largest interior space in the compound, and walking into it for the first time produces a specific physical response in most people: the noise arrives first, then the warmth, then the ambient mana pressure that settles against the skin like the moment before a thunderstorm that never quite breaks.
The space is divided into its three operational stages, each occupying a dedicated section of the floor connected by internal passages wide enough for the cart systems that move material between them.
The Crush Chamber wing sits at the receiving end of the factory, closest to the main gate where incoming stone deliveries arrive. The chambers themselves are not visible from the main floor—they are sealed rooms set into the outer wall, accessible only through heavy doors that remain locked during operation. What is visible is the receiving area outside them: long stone benches where incoming rough stone shipments are sorted and weighed before processing, the mechanical systems that feed stone into the chambers remotely, and the collection tank housings mounted above, their copper-threaded conduit feeds running upward and across the ceiling toward the Charging Hall at the far end.
The receiving area smells of stone dust and something that has no precise name—the faint metallic quality that raw mana stone carries when it has been in quantity in an enclosed space for long enough. Workers here move with the particular efficiency of people who have done the same tasks so many times that thought is not required. Stone is sorted. Weight is recorded. Batches are loaded. The chambers are sealed. The process runs.
The Mold Floor occupies the factory's middle section. The furnace rooms are set along the outer wall here, their heat immediately noticeable from across the floor. The kilns run at temperatures that make the air near them visibly distort, and workers in this section wear heavier protective clothing than anywhere else in the factory. The mold stations extend from the furnace rooms in long rows: metal mold assemblies on stone tables, ladle systems mounted on overhead tracks that move molten glass from kiln to mold without requiring workers to carry it. The cooling racks line the walls between stations, filled at most hours with raw stones in various stages of setting.
The Mold Floor is the loudest part of the factory. The kilns run continuously. The overhead track systems rattle and click. The molds are opened and reset in a rhythm that becomes background noise after an hour but hits newcomers like a physical thing.
The Charging Hall is at the far end of the factory from the receiving area, and it is the section most visitors remember longest.
The hall is the full height of the factory building, a large open space crossed overhead by the heavy conduit networks that feed down from the collection tanks. The cradle systems run in long parallel rows down the hall's length, each station capable of holding a full batch of raw stones simultaneously. The contact plate mechanisms are mounted above each cradle on adjustable arms, lowering to press against the stones during charging and retracting when the cycle completes.
When the hall is running at full capacity the ambient mana pressure inside is the highest of anywhere in the compound. It is not dangerous to healthy adults but it is immediately perceptible—a fullness in the ears, a slight heightening of awareness, a sense of the air having more substance than it should. Mana-sensitive individuals find the Charging Hall either exhilarating or deeply uncomfortable depending on their Resonance, and new workers are always assessed for sensitivity before being assigned to it permanently.
The stones change visibly during the charging cycle. A hall full of dull inert glass ovals becomes, over several hours, a hall full of objects that glow softly in their cradles like a field of pale pink embers. Workers who have run the hall for years claim they can tell by eye when a batch is ready. The instruments confirm what they already know.
The office wing
The office wing is where the Mana Guild conducts itself as an institution rather than an industrial operation.
The entrance is separate from the factory's working access, approached from a side road that branches from the main gate route and ends in a small paved forecourt designed for carriage arrival. The doors are heavy wood reinforced with iron, marked with the Guild seal at eye level. They open into a receiving hall that is immediately and deliberately different from the factory in every sensory detail: quieter, cooler, better lit by mana lamps in fixed wall housings, floored in dressed stone rather than the rougher paving of the working areas.
The receiving hall leads to the wing's internal organisation: a structure of corridors, meeting rooms, records offices, and the larger formal chambers where significant business is conducted.
The transport and logistics offices occupy the ground floor. This is where the Guild's coordination work happens: the scheduling of stone deliveries from adventuring parties and purchasing agents, the dispatch orders for finished product shipments to distributors across Versa and beyond, the paperwork that connects the refinery's output to the supply chains that carry it into the city. The offices are staffed continuously during working hours by Guild members who manage the flow of material and money that keeps the operation running. Walls are covered in route maps, delivery schedules, pricing sheets, and the accumulated documentation of an institution that moves significant weight every single day.
The merchant and union liaison offices sit adjacent to the logistics section. These are the rooms where the Mana Guild meets the Merchant Guild across a table, where supply contracts are negotiated, distribution agreements are maintained, and the pricing of refined product is argued over with the particular intensity that only money reliably produces. The Guild union representatives also operate from this wing, managing the labor agreements that govern working conditions, shift structures, and compensation for the refinery's considerable workforce. The rooms are better furnished than the logistics offices—these are rooms designed for negotiation, and negotiation responds to environment.
The senior administration offices occupy the upper floor of the wing, accessible by a wide internal staircase that is itself a statement about the Guild's sense of its own importance. The Guild Master's office is here, along with the offices of the senior administrators who manage the refinery's different operational divisions. The upper floor has the compound's best windows, looking out over the factory roofline toward the city in the distance and, on clear days, the faint dark line of the Tower's upper rim visible above Versa's rooftops.
The workshop annex
The workshop annex is the refinery's third identity, distinct from the industrial scale of the factory and the institutional weight of the office wing.
This is where the Mana Guild's practical craft work happens: the research, development, training, and production of the mana-based tools and systems that represent the Guild's output beyond simple refined stones.
The annex is divided into dedicated working areas, each oriented toward a specific discipline.
The Alchemist workshops occupy the largest section of the annex. These are working laboratories rather than production lines: long benches covered in equipment, storage racks holding reagents and partially completed work, fume management systems built into the ceiling above the stations where volatile combinations are produced. The Alchemists who work here are a mix of experienced Guild members conducting production work—filling orders for potions, coatings, and field supplies—and newer practitioners completing the training that will eventually qualify them for full Guild membership. The atmosphere is focused and specific. Alchemist work requires attention in a way that permits conversation but not distraction, and the annex reflects that: quieter than the factory, more purposeful than the offices, with the particular quality of a space where mistakes have known consequences.
The enchanted item workshops sit adjacent to the Alchemist section, separated by a partition wall that reduces interference between the two disciplines' mana work. Enchanted item production requires stable ambient conditions—fluctuating mana from nearby Alchemist work can affect the binding process in ways that range from merely inconvenient to genuinely dangerous. The enchanted item benches are therefore isolated, their own small mana conduit feeds running from the factory's collection network to provide the steady controlled supply that enchantment work requires. Items in various stages of completion occupy the bench surfaces and the storage racks: weapons with unfinished runic contacts, tool housings awaiting their stone fittings, partially assembled lamp units waiting for their final charge calibration.
The infrastructure and generator workshops are the most heavily built section of the annex, reflecting the scale of what is produced there. Mana Generators are not small objects. Their assembly requires space, heavy component handling, and the kind of structural support that lighter bench work does not. The floor here is reinforced. The ceiling is higher than in the rest of the annex. Overhead crane systems move large components between assembly stations. Finished Generators awaiting delivery sit along one wall in a row, their housings complete but uncharged, waiting for the final activation that will happen at their installation site rather than here. Mana infrastructure components—conduit sections, junction housings, valve assemblies, calibration plates—are produced in quantity in this section and move out in regular shipments to the construction and maintenance operations that keep Versa's mana systems functional.
The training area runs along the annex's inner wall, a long open section with demonstration benches, teaching materials mounted on the walls, and the kind of deliberately unfinished equipment that exists specifically to be worked on by people who are still learning. Junior Guild members rotate through the training area as part of their qualification process, supervised by senior practitioners who split their time between their own production work and instruction. The training area is the noisiest part of the annex—not from machinery but from the particular sound of people learning things in groups, the questions and corrections and occasional sharp instruction that fills any space where knowledge is being transferred under time pressure.
What it feels like to work there
Working at the Mana Refinery is steady, demanding, and specific.
The factory workers develop the particular physical adaptations of people who spend years in sustained ambient mana pressure: a baseline tolerance that civilians lack, an instinctive awareness of when the pressure in a room shifts, and the quiet professional habit of never touching anything without knowing exactly what it is charged with and at what level. Accidents in the factory are rare because the culture does not permit carelessness to persist long enough to become habit. They are not zero, because no industrial process that handles the volumes this facility handles can claim a perfect record. When they happen they are documented, reviewed, and used as the foundation of the next safety adjustment.
The office workers inhabit a different refinery from the factory workers. Their days are shaped by correspondence, scheduling, negotiation, and the management of an institution whose operational scale requires constant coordination to prevent entropy. They know the factory exists. Most of them have toured it once. Very few of them understand it in the way the workers inside it do, and the people on the factory floor are generally aware of that gap.
The annex practitioners occupy the middle ground. They understand both the industrial process that produces their raw materials and the institutional structure that sells their output. They are the Guild's specialists—the people whose knowledge cannot simply be replaced by hiring harder workers or building more efficient machinery. The Mana Guild treats them accordingly, which is to say: well enough to keep them, not so well that they forget who they work for.
