Overview
Alchemist is the Tower’s mana-craft support: a field technician who turns monster parts, reagents, and mana stones into usable effects—mostly through potions, bombs, coatings, and emergency item tuning. They are not “casters” in the mage sense. Their power is prepared mana bound into substances and devices, deployed fast and reliably under pressure.
Tag fit: Mana / Close Range / Support.
In a five-person party, the Alchemist’s slot is usually: - Combat sustain (healing, stamina, antidotes, cleansers) - Fight control (smoke, flash, slow, adhesive, slicking oils) - Gear uptime (quick repairs, enchantment stabilizing, battery management) - Loot conversion (reagent extraction and preserving valuable components)
What makes Alchemist different from other classes
- They convert resources into survival. Other classes spend stamina/mana to win fights; Alchemists spend planning + materials to prevent losses. - They’re the bridge between dungeon ecology and human industry. They understand what parts matter, how to preserve them, and how to turn them into saleable products. - Their “mana use” is indirect. They manipulate mana mostly through formula, vessels, catalysts, and bound reactions, not personal spell patterns.
Stat tendencies (Adventurer Card attributes)
(Typical leanings, not hard locks.)
Best / most emphasized - INS (Insight): diagnosis, reagent appraisal, reading contamination/curses, quick judgement under stress. - MNA (Mana): capacity/output to fuel infusions, stabilise reactions, and “push” items in the field. - RSN (Resonance): stability matters a lot when working with volatile mana under Tower pressure; low RSN Alchemists get accidents.
Usually weaker - STR (Strength): not a frontline class; carrying labs is different from wrestling goblins. - AGI (Agility): they can be trained to move well, but they’re rarely the fastest repositioner. - END (Endurance): variable; field Alchemists need it, but many transition into guild work once they’ve built skill and reputation.
Where they shine
- Keeping people alive: fast-response healing drafts, clotting agents, antivenoms, burn neutralisers, “Tower-sickness” mitigators. - Pre-fight prep: weapon coatings (bleed, acid, mana-shear), resistance tonics, sensory boosters. - Mid-fight utility (close range): smoke/flash flasks, sticky bombs, floor-slick vials—tools that change the geometry of a corridor fight. - Enchantment maintenance in combat: emergency stabilising, recharging, or re-tuning an enchanted item so it doesn’t fail at the worst time.
Where they don’t shine
- Pure DPS races: they can contribute damage (bombs, acids), but they’re not built to carry kills. - Long-range impact: most of their reliable work happens within arm’s reach (application, quick adjustments, triage). - Zero-prep situations: if they lose their kit, reagents, or stones, their value drops sharply—more than most classes.
How Alchemist “works” in-world (skill access logic)
Alchemist guild tracks unlock craft families and field protocols rather than flashy moves:
Core craft/support families - Brewcraft: potions, tonics, antidotes, stabilisers (with ranked recipes) - Infusion: binding mana into liquids, gels, oils, salts, and “capsule” vessels - Extraction & Preservation: harvesting glands, sacs, powders; preventing Tower recycling loss - Mixture Safety: preventing chain reactions under mana pressure (a real Tower hazard)
Combat-adjacent utility - Application techniques: fast dosing, measured drops, wound packing, coating blades safely - Field deployment: throwing vials without breaking early, timed shatters, area denial lines - Emergency item work: tightening runic contacts, replacing catalyst chips, rebalancing a failing enchantment
Mana rules / hard boundary vs Ritualists
- Alchemists can alter and improve enchantments on gear (weapons, tools, containers, charms), especially as temporary field adjustments. - Alchemists cannot cast enchantments on living beings (no direct “enchant the body/soul” work). That is Ritualist territory—ritual circles, vows, bindings, blessings/curses, and living-target enchantment.
This cleanly separates: - Alchemist = matter + vessel + reaction - Ritualist = living target + soul/mana binding
Social/economic role (fits your Tower economy)
Most Alchemists don’t stay long as deep delvers. A common career path is: 1. Field years to learn reality (what reagents actually do in Tower conditions) 2. Transition to Mana Guild / workshops once trusted and profitable
Because in Versa, a proven Alchemist can earn more supplying the Tower than risking their life inside it.
Quick phrasing you can reuse in prose
- “An Alchemist doesn’t cast. They prepare.” - “Their spells are bottled, labeled, and paid for in advance.” - “In the Tower, the difference between a wound and a death is often a vial you remembered to pack.”
If you want, tell me whether your setting distinguishes Alchemist vs Apothecary vs Enchanter as separate guild licenses, or if “Alchemist” covers them all with specialisations.
