Overview
Warden Rooms are the Tower's gatekeeping mechanism, found exclusively at every tenth floor threshold. They are the only path forward into deeper floor bands. There are no staircases, passages, or routes past Floor 10, Floor 20, or any subsequent threshold that do not pass through a Warden Room first.
Each threshold floor contains exactly thirty Warden Rooms. At any given time, exactly ten of them are active, identified by a Blue Lantern mounted above the door. The remaining twenty are empty, their doors standing open, and safe to enter freely. Scouts can rest, shelter, or examine unlit rooms without consequence. The Tower does not react to people inside an unlit room — until it does.
The moment the Tower assigns a Warden to an unlit room, the Blue Lantern above that door activates and the door closing sequence begins simultaneously. Anyone already inside when this happens is committed whether they intended to be or not.
The doors themselves are the most immediately striking feature of every Warden Room. They stand roughly four metres tall, constructed from a material dense enough that no force available to adventurers can damage, move, or remove them. Attempting to destroy or bypass the doors does not open the room — it breaks the room's internal system, deactivating the Anchors inside and permanently blocking the passage downward from that specific room. The doors are not a challenge to overcome. They are the architecture of the encounter.
When the first person crosses the threshold of a lit Warden Room, the doors begin closing. They take approximately thirty seconds to seal completely. During that window any number of people can enter freely. Once fully closed, the Warden emerges from the walls of the room itself — not waiting in a corner, not descending from above, but produced by the stone as though the room is giving birth to it. The rooms are large enough to hold the Warden and at least three full parties of five simultaneously, though numbers make movement difficult.
If every person leaves before the doors fully close, the Tower detects the absence of life, cancels the sequence, extinguishes the Blue Lantern, and reassigns that active slot to a different unlit room elsewhere on the floor. The opportunity is gone. The Warden moves on.
If the Warden kills the entire party, it is recycled by the Tower without dropping any loot — not even its mana stone. The doors open once it is gone. The bodies and equipment of the dead party remain exactly where they fell and can be looted by anyone who enters afterward. The room does not reactivate unless the Tower independently assigns a future Warden slot to it by chance.
If the party kills the Warden, a Warden Anchor and an Exit Anchor both activate inside the room. The Warden Anchor connects to the next floor band at no cost — it is the Tower's acknowledgement that the threshold has been cleared. The Exit Anchor follows standard extraction rules, requiring the appropriate mana stone payment for the current depth. Neither Anchor is free beyond what the standard system already provides. The doors remain sealed for as long as at least one living person remains inside, protecting the party during harvest. The Warden's corpse follows the standard one-hour recycling window from the moment of death regardless of how long the party stays. Once the last person leaves through either Anchor the doors unseal, both Anchors deactivate, and the room becomes an ordinary empty chamber.
