Physical Description
The Trench Goblin has been documented more extensively than any other first-band creature and understood less than that documentation would suggest. It is humanoid in the loosest sense — bipedal, with articulated arms and a head oriented forward — but the proportions are wrong in ways that become more apparent the longer one looks. The limbs are too long relative to the torso. The fingers are too many and bend in too many directions. The skull is compressed horizontally and extended vertically, giving the face a pinched quality that is emphasised by the eyes — pale, very large in proportion to the face, with pupils that dilate and contract in response to light at a speed that tracks ambient mana fluctuation rather than conventional illumination.
The average specimen is roughly one metre twenty in height and significantly lighter than that height implies. The skeleton is dense but the musculature is minimal, producing a creature that is quick and agile within the limitations of its build but notably weaker than a healthy adult human in direct physical confrontation. The skin is a mottled grey-brown that provides effective camouflage against dressed stone. The teeth are flat-edged and numerous, designed for grinding rather than tearing, which is consistent with observations of their diet — they are omnivores with a particular interest in the organic residue left by other creatures.
Goblins carry tools. This is the detail that consistently surprises new adventurers who have been told the creature is a weak first-band enemy and then encounter one operating a mechanism designed to drop a section of ceiling. The tools are not sophisticated by surface standards. They are functional, made from materials available in the Tower's upper floors, and deployed with the competence of creatures that have been using them long enough to know which applications work.
The mana stone in a Trench Goblin is small and located in the upper chest. It is the lowest-yield stone in the first-band roster.
Behaviour
Trench Goblins are the most behaviourally complex creatures in the first-band roster and the only ones whose danger level scales meaningfully with group size in a way that involves something resembling deliberate coordination.
Individuals are not a significant threat to a prepared party. A single goblin will assess the party's size and composition, determine whether direct engagement is favourable, and either attack opportunistically or retreat to recruit. The retreat-to-recruit behaviour is the critical detail. A goblin that decides against immediate engagement will move through the corridors toward other goblin concentrations and return with numbers. This is not a guarantee — the Tower's internal topology can isolate goblin groups — but it is a reliable behavioural pattern that experienced parties account for.
Groups of three to six are the standard patrol formation and the most common encounter type. In this configuration goblins use the corridors' architectural features deliberately — they push objects into lane positions to slow movement, they use multiple approach angles, and the subset that carries thrown weapons positions itself to apply pressure while closer members engage the frontline. This is not sophisticated tactics. It is terrain exploitation by creatures that have lived in this specific environment long enough to know which architectural features are useful and which are not.
Groups of seven or more — which occur in two specific patterns, the established territorial group and the assembled response to a party that has been making noise through their section of the floor — represent the most serious threat in the first-band roster. At this size, the goblins begin using prepared mechanisms: ceiling section supports that have been partially compromised in advance and can be triggered remotely, wall sections behind which secondary goblins wait to emerge after the initial engagement draws defensive attention forward, and what can only be described as alarm systems — noise-making mechanisms positioned at corridor junctions that alert goblins in adjacent sections to approach.
None of this is instinct. It is learned behaviour, passed between generations of goblins living in the same floor band across instances. The Tower resets the layout, but the goblins adapt the same techniques to new geography. The architectural variety between instances does not neutralise their effectiveness — it just changes which specific techniques they have deployed in a given instance.
Threat Assessment
Single goblin: Negligible. The threat is exclusively the retreat-to-recruit behaviour. Kill it quickly and quietly or establish containment before it can leave the engagement zone.
Group of three to six (standard patrol): Low to Moderate. The terrain exploitation behaviour is exploitable once identified — objects pushed into lane positions are obvious, and multiple-approach-angle tactics fail against parties with reliable gap support. A Hunter with Lane Denial and a Vanguard with Hold the Line handles this configuration without significant difficulty.
Group of seven or more (territorial/assembled): Moderate to High. The prepared mechanisms change the engagement profile entirely. Ceiling section traps are not obvious to parties without Hazard Sense or Floor Pattern Read skill. The alarm architecture means that failure to neutralise the engagement quickly will result in additional groups arriving. The wall-cache ambush pattern specifically targets parties who assume that the goblins they can see represent the goblins they need to fight.
Territorial Mechanics
Goblin territories on each floor are established early in an instance and generally stable for the instance's duration. A territory is defined by the set of corridors and rooms from which a goblin patrol group operates and to which the alarm network connects. Knowing a territory's boundaries in any given instance — which the Wayfinders Guild's current maps provide for all first-band goblin concentrations — allows parties to plan routes that avoid the larger group configurations entirely.
Parties that lack current maps and blunder into an established territory mid-instance typically encounter the assembled response configuration rather than the standard patrol. This is the most common cause of serious injury among new adventurers on Floors 001 through 004.
Notes on Traps
Goblin-set mechanisms in the first band are uniformly improvised from available Tower materials and fall into three categories: ceiling drop traps (partial compromising of existing unstable ceiling sections, typically preceded by visible cracking or unusual amounts of ceiling debris in the corridor), position delay objects (heavy objects pushed into movement lanes, often disguised as natural debris), and noise triggers (arrangements that produce loud sound when disturbed, intended to alert rather than harm). None of these are subtle by the standards of deliberate trap construction. All of them are effective against parties who are not looking for them.
Economic Notes
The mana stone yield from individual goblins is poor. Volume is the yield strategy — a cleared territorial group at maximum size can produce meaningful stone returns in aggregate. The improvised tools are not worth extracting for commercial value. Some researchers have expressed interest in goblin alarm mechanism designs as evidence of cultural transmission between Tower generations, but this is academic rather than economic interest.
