Overview
Pairing Identity
Rogue + Vanguard is the cross path of close-range pressure control.
This is not “light tank” or “fast fighter” as a shallow hybrid.
It is the fusion of:
- Rogue local movement, timing, gap support, and flow control
with
- Vanguard line discipline, threat control, and direct close-range fighting
A character on this path specializes in:
- controlling dangerous close space
- entering pressure where the line is failing
- stabilizing and then weaponizing messy melee exchanges
- forcing enemies into bad contact decisions
- holding local tactical advantage without becoming a full static tank
Where Rogue alone relieves pressure and shifts between positions, and Vanguard alone holds and directs pressure, this cross path creates the fighter who dominates the unstable edge where a line is about to break or reform.
Access Rule
This cross path may only be learned by:
- a Rogue
- or a Vanguard
A character may begin this path through either side of the overlap:
- Rogue-side training tradition
- Vanguard-side training tradition
Once a character successfully learns their first Rogue + Vanguard cross-class skill, they become bound to the Rogue + Vanguard cross path.
This means:
- future cross-class development may only come from
Rogue + Vanguard
- that character may not begin any other cross-class pairing later
Example:
- a Rogue who learns their first
Rogue + Vanguardcross-skill is now committed to the Vanguard cross path
- that Rogue may not later begin
Hunter + Roguecross-class development
This cross path is learned by one character, not by two teammates performing a combined move.
What This Pairing Is
This pairing is the fusion of:
- close-space discipline
- adaptive melee positioning
- pressure interception
- local line control
- angle denial
- hostile contact management
It is for the character who can step into a collapsing or unstable close fight and make it function on their terms.
What This Pairing Is Not
This pairing is not:
- a Rogue becoming a full tank
- a Vanguard becoming a stealth skirmisher
- a generic duelist
- a team combo between a Rogue and Vanguard in the same group
It should remain focused on:
- unstable frontline space
- adaptive close-range control
- pressure redirection
- denying clean enemy contact sequences
Shared Overlap
Rogue contributes:
- adaptive positioning
- pressure relief
- flow reading
- local disruption
- angle exploitation
Vanguard contributes:
- hold discipline
- threat lock
- direct close-range pressure
- cover and line protection
- frontline combat read
The cross path appears where:
- pressure relief becomes local line stabilization
- position break becomes close-space containment
- frontline holding becomes more mobile and angle-aware
- support movement becomes controlled pressure entry
What This Path Can Do
A Rogue + Vanguard character can do things neither class fully owns alone:
- step into an unstable close-space fight and force it to settle in their favor
- punish enemies who try to exploit line weakness
- hold a dangerous local position without needing full static tank posture
- redirect enemy close-range pressure through better contact timing and angle control
- function as a flexible melee stabilizer between strict frontline holding and pure mobile support
This path should feel like:
- edge-of-the-line controller
- contact stabilizer
- adaptive melee enforcer
- close-range flow breaker

Skill Entries
Pressure Point
Category: Control
Class access: Rogue + Vanguard
Short identity line: Enter the right place in the melee and make the enemy’s pressure stop working properly.
What competency this skill represents:
The identification and occupation of the most important local pressure point in a close-range exchange, where intervention has the highest stabilizing or disruptive value.
Why this belongs to this pairing in the lore:
Rogue reads where support is needed. Vanguard understands where pressure is being applied. This skill fuses both into close-space intervention authority.
Typical prerequisites:
- Rogue: Flow Read Rank C
- Vanguard: Battle Read Rank C
Compatible weapon / tool / item families if relevant:
- light or standard melee weapons
- shields in some builds
- armor compatible with close control
What Rank D means:
Can identify and enter obvious local pressure points usefully.
What Rank C means:
Recognizes more subtle pressure failures and acts before they widen.
What Rank B means:
Can repeatedly enter the right close-space lane before enemy pressure fully converts into line damage.
What Rank A means:
Reads and occupies pressure-critical close space with exceptional timing and tactical value.
Narrative use:
Strong for scenes where the hybrid saves a collapsing exchange by being in exactly the right place.
Tabletop use:
Supports:
- reinforcing weak close positions
- identifying pressure-critical targets or zones
- stabilizing threatened melee space
Limits and anti-abuse notes:
Not omniscience and not full battlefield command.
Overlap check with other classes:
Rogue reads flow broadly. Vanguard reads the frontline. This pairing owns the unstable contact point between them.
Hold and Release
Category: Control
Class access: Rogue + Vanguard
Short identity line: Keep the enemy just long enough to break their timing, then change the shape of the exchange.
What competency this skill represents:
The controlled rhythm of briefly fixing an enemy in contact and then releasing or turning that contact to create a worse follow-up for them.
Why this belongs to this pairing in the lore:
Vanguard understands committed contact. Rogue understands timing breaks and reposition pressure. Together, they create short-hold contact control.
Typical prerequisites:
- Rogue: Position Break Rank C
- Vanguard: Hold the Line Rank C
Compatible weapon / tool / item families if relevant:
- swords
- shields
- spears
- short blades
- practical melee arms
What Rank D means:
Can briefly control straightforward contact and disrupt enemy follow-up.
What Rank C means:
Uses short-hold contact to create more consistent bad timing and positioning for enemies.
What Rank B means:
Can repeatedly control the rhythm of close contact in ways that make enemies commit badly.
What Rank A means:
Turns close-contact exchanges into a controlled trap of timing and pressure.
Narrative use:
Excellent for making the hybrid feel like a close-range tactician rather than a brute.
Tabletop use:
Supports:
- local engagement control
- rhythm disruption
- timed pressure release
- setup for allied follow-up
Limits and anti-abuse notes:
Not grappling supremacy and not permanent lockdown.
Overlap check with other classes:
Vanguard holds longer and harder. Rogue slips and breaks. This pairing controls the short decisive hold.
Intercepting Guard
Category: Control / Defense
Class access: Rogue + Vanguard
Short identity line: Cut into the path of close danger before it lands cleanly.
What competency this skill represents:
The adaptive interception of melee threats through body, weapon, shield, or positional entry without needing the full static commitment of a pure line-holder.
Why this belongs to this pairing in the lore:
Vanguard covers allies through direct interposition. Rogue moves fast enough to reach danger points. Together, they create flexible melee interception.
Typical prerequisites:
- Rogue: Adaptive Positioning Rank C
- Vanguard: Cover Ally Rank C
Compatible weapon / tool / item families if relevant:
- shields
- swords
- spears
- short blades
- medium or heavier defensive gear depending on build
What Rank D means:
Can intercept obvious close-range threats before they land cleanly.
What Rank C means:
Interposes more quickly and from less obvious starting positions.
What Rank B means:
Can repeatedly break enemy close attacks by entering their path at the right moment.
What Rank A means:
Functions as an exceptional close-range threat interceptor in unstable melee space.
Narrative use:
Very strong for making the hybrid feel protective without becoming a full static tank.
Tabletop use:
Supports:
- intercepting melee pressure
- defending allies in close range
- flexible bodyguard play
- frontline gap rescue
Limits and anti-abuse notes:
Still depends on proximity, angle, and timing. It does not replace full Vanguard line presence.
Overlap check with other classes:
Vanguard covers through solid line position. Rogue repositions. This pairing intercepts through adaptive defensive entry.
Edge Control
Category: Control / Combat
Class access: Rogue + Vanguard
Short identity line: Own the dangerous edge of the melee where structure is weakest.
What competency this skill represents:
The maintenance of tactical dominance over the unstable edge of a close combat space, where enemies are trying to slip past, regroup, or widen the fight.
Why this belongs to this pairing in the lore:
This is the strongest expression of the pairing’s identity: not full line-holding, not pure skirmishing, but controlling the dangerous edge of contact.
Typical prerequisites:
- Rogue: Gap Support Rank C
- Vanguard: Threat Lock Rank C or Drive Back Rank C
Compatible weapon / tool / item families if relevant:
- swords
- shields
- spears
- short blades
- mixed close-range gear
What Rank D means:
Can hold and shape a fragile edge of melee better than ordinary fighters.
What Rank C means:
Prevents enemies from turning unstable side-space into a breakthrough or clean flank.
What Rank B means:
Can dominate dangerous side-pressure zones and keep them favorable to the party.
What Rank A means:
Controls the edge of melee so well that enemies find it extremely difficult to exploit local instability.
Narrative use:
This is one of the best skills for making the path feel unique and visible.
Tabletop use:
Supports:
- flank denial
- side
